WhatsApp, the popular messaging app affiliated with Meta, is preparing to take its user experience internationally to the next level. Having introduced AI-based summarization and text suggestions just a few weeks ago, the app has now officially released its highly anticipated message translation feature for iOS users.
This new feature, introduced in version 25.28.74, also stands out with the official launch of Live Photos support. Meta notes that it may take several weeks for the feature to reach all users.
How does the WhatsApp translation feature work?
While this new WhatsApp translation tool requires a small download for initial installation, it later stands out with its ability to work offline. Here’s how to access translation step-by-step:
- Tap and hold the message you want to translate.
- Select “More…” from the menu that opens.
- Check the “Translate” option in the menu.
- On first use, you’ll be prompted to select the source and target languages and download the relevant language packs to your device.
After downloading the language packs, you’ll be able to instantly translate messages even without an active internet connection. You can also manage downloaded languages and download new ones from Settings > Translate > Downloaded Languages.
According to information shared by WABetaInfo, 21 different languages are currently supported. However, Meta also notes that this feature has some limitations:
- Translatable Content: Text messages sent or received in individual or group chats can be translated.
- Untranslatable Content: Locations, documents, contacts, stickers, and GIFs cannot be translated.
- Requirements: Sufficient storage space and a strong WiFi signal or cellular data connection are required for translation during the initial download.
The Feature Supports the Following Languages:
Arabic, Chinese (Simplified/Traditional Mandarin), Dutch, English (UK/US), French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
This new translation tool from WhatsApp will further strengthen the app’s global reach, providing great convenience especially for users communicating internationally.
